Hurricane Relief Efforts Continue

Continuing their commitment to the families affected by the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, the NBPA, in partnership with New York Knick Tyson Chandler’s Rebound 4 Rockaway campaign and Feed The Children, sponsored a tractor-trailer filled with food, disaster relief items and clothing that was provided to 400 families in Far Rockaway earlier this month.
The recent distribution, which included participation from NBPA Executive Director Billy Hunter, Chandler and his wife Kimberly, is just one component of the partners’ hurricane relief efforts.
The NBPA, in conjunction with the NBA, already pledged $1 million to the Red Cross and other organizations. This initiative in Far Rockaway was part of the Association’s Operation Rebound, a long-term commitment by the NBPA and its 400-plus players to provide disaster relief and assistance in the rebuilding efforts of local communities.
“It is our hope that our Operation Rebound efforts in Far Rockaway made a significant impact on this area victimized by the storm. Our partnership with Tyson Chandler and Feed The Children forged us a wonderful opportunity to provide some hurricane relief, especially during the holiday season,” said Hunter. “The NBPA applauds the efforts of players like Tyson Chandler who have made long-term commitments to neighborhoods in distress and families in need.”
Through the Chandler’s Rebound 4 Rockaway campaign, which is aimed at collecting items and monetary donations that will go toward helping the community recover from the destructive effects of Hurricane Sandy, the couple has led numerous outreach efforts in New York’s hardest hit areas. Chandler is also part of a coalition of pro athletes working with Diapers.com to create registries of essentials that can be purchased for families by the public and players themselves.
“After visiting the Far Rockaway community and seeing firsthand the devastating impact this storm has had on so many, my wife and I decided to take an active role in the relief efforts and launch Rebound 4 Rockaway,” said Chandler. “Our partnership with the NBPA and Feed The Children came at a time when the aid out there is fading. We are in this for the long haul, and thankful for our partners who continue to help make it happen in areas that need our help the most.”
