Based on the experiences of its membership – NBA players
– the NBPA has learned that numerous unique and extraordinary
situations challenge professional basketball players. Apart
from the pressure of having to perform on-court, the NBPA
has come to understand and appreciate the multitude of off-court
situations that players regularly have to confront. How a
player handles these off-court challenges can have as much
of an impact on his career in the NBA and his future as his
on-court performance.
The NBPA Department of Player Programs (“Player Programs”)
was established in 1993 to help players address these issues
and prepare them to face life outside of and after basketball.
Since its creation, Player Programs has made an impact on
the lives of current and former players by providing them
with educational programs and support services. In addressing
NBA players’ needs and lifestyle concerns, Player Programs
has acted to help players maximize their potential both on
and off the court.
In fulfilling its mission, the NBPA provides a comprehensive
Player Programs Department, which provides education, advice,
guidance and support to NBA players on an ongoing basis. Through
Player Programs – staffed by retired NBA players – players can more effectively deal with this spectrum of on
and off the court problems, thereby increasing their likelihood
of succeeding as professional athletes and enhancing both
their own careers and the public image of professional basketball.
The following are some of the services
currently provided:
Health Related Programs – The Health
Education Program is committed to the development and implementation
of high quality and innovative health education, and also
seeks to raise players’ awareness of HIV/AIDS issues.
We also have developed a comprehensive second opinion program
to help layers navigate through difficult medical decisions
with the aid of unbiased and independent expert practitioners.
Player Assistance Program – This program
provides substance abuse education, early intervention and
treatment to all NBA players and ensures access to comprehensive
evaluation and treatment of significant mental health and
behavioral concerns.
Financial Education – Through this program,
we promote and encourage the financial education of all NBA
players. Specifically, we disseminate financial information
and help players better understand and manage their finances
during their career, as well as after it ends. We can also
help arrange for a more personalized and in-depth review of
investments and fees paid for the investment services provided.
High School Camp - In our one-week camp held
annually each summer, we invite the top 100 high school players
in the country and help develop them into student athletes
whose personalities are as well rounded as their basketball
skills.
Rookie Transition – Held in conjunction
with the NBA, this week-long seminar is designed to provide
all first-year players with the basics needed to insure a
successful transition into the NBA.
Summer Clinics – As part of our community
outreach, we organize and conduct clinics for inner city youth
both in urban U.S. cities and abroad. The clinics stress the
importance of education, and help kids hone their skills in
basketball and life.
